A Brief History

BATTLE TOWN FC – A Brief History – Gary Wenham, Club Secretary

Formerly Battle Baptist FC and founded in 2004 by Gary Walsh, the club has grown significantly over the years.

The club currently has three sides competing within the East Sussex Football League, with the first team in the Premier Division, the seconds in Division 1 and the thirds in Division 4. In addition, the club has Veterans Team competing in the Hastings & District Vets league and a walking football squad, currently playing socially, but with ambitions to enter a local league.

Youth football and women’s/girls’ football are firmly on the agenda as we look to expand our footballing offer to the wider community.

The first team have enjoyed some significant successes with six promotions in 10 seasons. We have made runners up spot in the ESFL Premiership our own, finishing second in the last four seasons. The 2019/20 season looked like breaking that sequence with a 7 from 7-win record, before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19.

There has been recent success in cup competitions, winning the prestigious NCC (National Christian Cup) and the East Sussex League in 2017. The NCC success was repeated in 2019 with both finals taking place at ‘The Valley’, home of Charlton Athletic FC.

Success on the playing field remains a stated aim of the club with ambitions for Step 7 (County League) firmly in our sights.
